Guardian: Jewish School Loses Appeal

This case from a few years back was an interesting reminder that to a lot of Westerners, religion is a belief system that can be adopted by anyone (and in the case of evangelicals, should.) But outside the dominant Western religions (like Christianity or Islam) religion is more a trait of an ethnic group than anything else.

This causes some confusion for liberal rights when we want to say things like “sure, freedom of association means you can have a school consisting only of people of your religion” but we’re thinking of religion as something you can freely opt into or out of.
